Tagless Labels in Underwear
I’ve been watching a trend in the underwear business. Particularly In the last year, there has been a real uptick in tagless bras, panties and other lingerie. That pesky tag is being replaced by heat transfer labels that are fused right inside the garment.
There are actually a couple reasons for this trend. First, tag-less labels are fast and easy to apply in the factory. A simple machine can fuse the garment with minimal manual labor. Second, most people prefer a tag-less garment because it’s more comfortable to wear and eliminates the possibility of the label sticking out above your clothing.
It’s the third reason for this trend that really caught my eye. Heat transfer labeling greatly reduces the risk of counterfeiting. Certain clothing labels are now creating very intricate and unique fused labeling into their garments to deflect other manufacturers from knocking off their goods.
Though I like the concept of a fused label, it still has a way to go in my opinion. I purchased a couple of white tagless t-shirts the other day and was disappointed to find that the heat transfer label could be seen through my t-shirt…. not a good look.

Dear Tomima,
Thanks for the insight on counterfeiting. Had not thought of that before and of course it makes perfect sense.
I have been happy with tagless foundation garments for yet another reason …. they make it easier to find exactly what you are looking for in a crowded lingerie drawer.
This is particularly true of pantyhose. Anything sewn in or transferred on helps find the perfect legging at the start of a rushed day.
And this girl needs all the help she can get…
Love the blog. Keep it up!

Interesting topic; I was unaware of counterfeiting. I like the tags also because they allow easier finding of the size and brand when they are on price reduction racks. I wear Hanes Hipsters and they have been tag less lately. Not sure if this is the way of things to come or are they counterfeit. I buy at reputable stores. I mentioned this to my wife and she says all of hers has tags but until this article neither of us has considered that.
Off the thread a little but I would like to share a topic my wife and I have discussed at length this last week. We feel there is a huge market out there for males and panties but more as a uni-sex product. The word panties in its self are a turn off to males. I am a male who has worn panties for several years and 24/7. I don’t wear them for sexual pleasure nor did I wear my sisters when as a kid. I don’t do the frilly lacy types or thongs. My wife introduced me to them because besides being a firefighter and a nurse; we have a landscaping business and I came home hot and sweating. She turned me onto Girls Boxers. They are comfortable however they can show above my pants line so we tried other styles. We finally stuck with Hipsters or Boy shorts and cotton is fabric of choice by far. It did take a while to get used to a different feeling from male briefs but I love them. They are functional and feel great. I wear them at the fired department and also the seamless ones are great under my scrubs.
We believe strongly that these products can be sold to men but getting over the stigma of the word panties is a difficult sales task. Also there is the obvious wearing of panties by some males for sexual release and I assume that will never change for some guys nor will wearing boxers be the same sexual connotation for some women.
For comfort and fit; I will take panties any day. Sorry I am sure this wasn’t the thread for this exposition. I want feel slighted if defeated.
Hello Dave – Thank you for this candid comment. For years, we have seen men buying women’s panties – some for legitimate reasons, others for, well… Anyway, trying to market to men is a slippery slope. We used to include men’s reviews on women’s panties, but many women complained, so we took them off. I’m afraid most men, such as yourself, will need to hire their wives to steer them in the right direction. Again, thank you for your views.

In response to what dave said, I would say that as a male today we have so many options for our lingerie that we really don’t need to purchase women’s products. There are many many men’s lingerie products that will work for you but have the advantage of being designed for the male anatomy. More and more men today now have different lingerie for different pruposes, like everyday stuff, items that work better for sports and then “special occasion” items. For me, Calvin Klein is my everyday wear, but I do have a nice collection of Griglioperla for special occasions.

I’m sorry about the label on your shirt. Actually, this is a good concept but only works if paired with the right type of cloth.
