Men Prefer Boxer Briefs–Who Knew?

February 24, 2011

boxer briefsIn a recent New York Daily News article, an interesting statistic was given: 40% of men’s underwear sales in 2010 were for boxer briefs.  Less than 30% were for the traditional boxer.

This is quite a shift.  Boxer briefs have been gaining, but the traditional brief has always held the top spot.  So, why the change?  I think women have had a lot to do with this.  We simply like men in boxer briefs over tighty whities.

From a practical perspective, men probably feel it’s more acceptable to walk around in their boxer briefs rather than just briefs, and boxer briefs tend to work a little better under jeans anyway.  But whatever they buy, I’m just glad they are back and buying.  2009 was a tough retail year for men’s underwear – they just weren’t buying.  But 2010 was strong, ending with a 10.7% increase.  2011 has also started off with a bang.  We’re keeping our fingers crossed.

What’s in Your Underwear Drawer?

February 17, 2011

We just ran our first contest ever on the HerRoom Facebook page. We asked women to submit a photo or two of their lingerie drawers and we picked those most in need of a makeover.  The first prize was a $400 HerRoom shopping spree, with a second prize and honorable mentions as well.  It was a lot of fun and, along the way we saw a few themes emerging, which we’re guessing apply beyond our contest.

The first thing we saw was that regardless of how much lingerie one owns, almost nothing fits. The primary reasons for this are weight loss or gain, pregnancy and childbirth or other changes in body shape.  Many of the contestants are getting by on only one or two bras that fit them correctly. We thought that the winning contest entry illustrates this point perfectly.

Gain a few pounds, lose a few pounds–it’s easy to tell when your jeans don’t fit or a shirt doesn’t button. But with bras, that (mis)fit can be more subtle–straps that start slipping, bands that feel a little too tight, a bit of spillage over the tops of the bra cups or, as one contestant mentioned, cups that actually dent when you put them on–these are just a few of the signs that your bra does not fit.

And no matter how lovely your lingerie may be, if it doesn’t fit it’s just drawer decoration.

By the way, you can find more fit problems and solutions in the Fitting Guide on HerRoom.

What Men Want to See on Valentine’s Eve

February 02, 2011

sheer black braValentine’s Day is coming, and our emails are sounding the charge.  Scores of men are shopping online in the lingerie category, looking for something to present to the women in their lives. Guess what they’re looking for.

Let’s start with color.  By a landslide, the inquiries are for black.  There is something about black lingerie that just does something to men.  By the way, this is good news for us as the recipients. It is much easier to turn around and wear that black item over and over again.  How many of us have red bras we rarely wear?

Next on their list is sheer.  Boy, do men love sheer.  It must be in their DNA because even our cross-dresser customers want sheer lingerie.  Sheer can come in many different styles from bras to nightgowns to panties. And, of course, anything sheer in black is at the top of the list.

sheer black pantiesMen also like outfits.  We are fielding scores of questions about garters and the stockings that go with them.  So, building on a theme here–a sheer black lingerie ensemble is a home run for men.

And finally, we are seeing a lot of questions about shelf or chopper bras.  Interestingly enough the inquiries are coming more from women than men, but there are still a lot of men wondering about how to size them.  Personally, I wouldn’t advise a man to purchase this item unless he is very familiar with his partner.  Sagging is an unattractive symptom for many women in these bras.

So, be a tease this Valentine’s Day and have some fun wearing lingerie you’ve never dared to wear before.
