Great smelling lingerie

June 29, 2008

Here’s a twist.  Underwear that always smells freshly washed.  Huntsman Textiles has invented Invasan RCD, a finish added to fabric during its final processing.  The goal is to give your clothes a longer "just washed fragrance."

Here’s how it works. Derived from sugar (so it’s environmentally green), RCD’s small capsules bond to cotton during fabric processing.  The capsules get charged with the scent from your laundry detergent or fabric softener during the laundry process.  As you wear the garment throughout the day, your body heat and moisture release the scent from these capsules. The result is that you smell fresher longer.

So here’s my question.  What happens if a smelly wet fish gets in contact with your RCD treated t-shirt?  Does the fish’s odor charge up inside these capsules and waft off you throughout the day? Can you ever get the odor out?  Sounds to me like a few more answers are needed before this Invasan RCD fabric process will gain mass appeal.

How Not To Look Old

June 18, 2008

Are you over 40? 50? 60? Here’s a fun book to pick you up – How Not to Look Old, by Charla Krupp. This hot new book has the kind of sensible advice even the style-cynic can take to heart. Fave chapter? "Learn to Love Shapewear." If you think today’s shapewear is only for the plus-sized, think again. According to Krupp, such single-digit sized-women as the Desperate Housewives babes, Katie Couric, and Gwyneth Paltrow all recognize the need for some shaping. Let’s face it, after a certain age, even the slimmest among us are prey to back fat, love handles, Buddha bellies and other less-than-attractive traits.

Krupp recommends shapewear for pretty much all day, every day. Some of her suggested "Brilliant Buys?" Flexees One Fabulous Body Camisole 77320, Spanx 160 High Waisted Footless Pantyhose, Donna Karan Hosiery Donna Karan Body Perfect Slimmer – Level 1 0A701, Maidenform Control It High-Waist Brief 12419.

When it comes to bras, Krupp reinforces everything I keep telling you here on HerRoom—it’s about fit, fit, fit. Her quickie saggy boob test, which has been on HerRoom for over 8 years, suggests you measure yourself from the top of your shoulder to the bend in your elbow. When trying on a bra, your nipple should hit about mid-way between the two, maybe slightly lower for very large breasts. Her Brilliant Buys in bras? Le Mystere Tisha Bra – Full Figure Renaissance 9955, Wacoal iBra Contour Bra 85380, Chantelle Volupte Molded Minimizer Bra 2361, Natori Sheer Mesh Convertible Contour Plunge 132005.

If you’re going to start knocking those years off, why not begin with your underwear drawer?

The Right to Wear Underwear

June 09, 2008

Who would have thought that the right to underwear would have to be earned?  Well, about 200 staff members of a Hindu Temple in Southern India did.

About 10 years ago, Sabarimala Temple installed a dress code barring staff from wearing underwear. The reason?  Well, apparently, it is the second busiest temple next to Tirupati in Southern India and therefore has chronic theft issues with the donations given to the temple.  Nearly 50 million Hindus and tourists visit during the special Hindu pilgrimage season.

The temple received more than $18 million last year in donations, and many donations are made in silver, gold, diamonds and other precious currency other than cash.  The staff who works in the strong room where the donations are kept were only allowed to wear a basic sarong called a "mundu."

The Human Rights Commission stepped in and won the staff their right to wear underwear again.  New modern technology has now been put in place like x-ray machines to prevent future theft and allow the 60 on-duty staff to wear underwear.

This got me thinking; What underwear would be the most appropriate under a sarong?  My guess would be cotton panties and cotton boxers for their breathability and comfort.  Though performance fabrics like Micro modal could be a good choice as well.
