A Loincloth For Women?

April 28, 2009

wacoal fundoshiThis took me by surprise.  The Japan based Wacoal company has been making and selling loincloths for women since December of last year.  Called a fundoshi, it’s basically a rectangle piece of fabric with ties.

Okay, so let’s ask the basic question–why?  The answer, according to Tomoka Okamura (Merchandise Director for Wacoals’ Nanafun brand) is that it’s the "ultimate liberation item" for women.  After a hard days work, many girls like to be able to come home and relax without having tight or binding panties on.

With over 5,000 being sold so far in Japan, the plan is to roll the fundoshi out to other countries in the Pacific Rim.  No plans at this time to bring it to the US.

I agree this is kind of a fun twist on a very old idea.  But, I’m surprised the shape hasn’t been a little modernized.  For example, I would think an hourglas shape to reduce the fabric bulk between the legs would have been designed into it. One also has to ask how comfortable this really is with the possible gapping at the legs and probably frequent adjustments to maintain modesty.  But, in the end, it is something new.  Don’t be surprised if you see this showing up as a bathing suit option in a summer coming soon.

The Bra Dryer – I Bet It Was Designed By A Man

March 19, 2009

bra dryerA friend forwarded an article about a new technical achievement in bra maintainance – the bra dryer.  Simply strap your bra onto this female torso-shaped device and dry your bras faster while preserving their shape.  Oh brother.

My first question was "What size is this device?"  I’ve read all the reviews I could find on this device and no one talks about this.  It looks to be about a C cup.  Now, what if you’re an A cup or a DDD cup?  How is this thing going to dry and shape your bras properly?  If you are smaller than this, your bras could dry into a strange shape.  Too large, and you could have wrinkles.

My second question was "Aren’t the breasts kind of pointed?"  Most women want a rounded shape – this device is a blast back to the 50′s when women wanted this more conical breast shape.

My final question was "Why do we need to dry our bras faster?"  Almost all of us have several bras.  So, we can wear one while another one dries.  And, chances are a second bra is going to be much cheaper than buying this device.  If there was anything I would want dried faster, it would be a favorite pair of jeans.  Now there’s an idea.

I have to think my bra drying experience is pretty similar to other woman.  I simply hang them up to dry.  A couple hours and they’re good to go.  I’ve never felt this was an inconvenience.  Bras today are made in fabrics that dry pretty fast.  So, I just don’t think I would need this gadget.  And, now that I think about it, where would I store this thing?  It’s pretty big!

I clicked on the "about us" and "contact us" links to their site, and found only male names associated with this contraption.  Ten bucks says I’m right.

Victoria Beckham is the New Face for Giorgio Armani Lingerie

January 20, 2009

armani for women

First, it was David Beckham spreading his legs in nothing but his Emporio Armani tighty whities.  Now, his wife, Victoria aka Posh Spice follows suit.  Emporio Armani’s women’s underwear division has been born, and Victoria Beckham is its new face.

Scheduled to break this spring in a world-wide advertising campaign, the lingerie will be an exclusive at Macy’s for at least the first 2 months. Not much is being shared about the offering except the price points.  The bras will range from $50-$100, and the bottoms will range from $25 to $70.
