Bra Recycling Month
October 16, 2011
It’s October! Did you also know it’s the month for the second annual bra recycling campaign?
This month, along with the traditional Breast Cancer and Domestic Violence Awareness campaigns, The Bra Recyclers, based in Gilbert, Arizona have decided to help bring awareness to these issues by collecting and recycling bras. There are women across America without a clean and properly fitted bra. The Bra Recyclers say that last year’s collection gave self-esteem and strength to the thousands of women who received the gently-used or new bras that had been donated.
This year, the Bra Recyclers are hosting weekly raffles to give away prizes. Each woman who makes a donation is put into the drawing for a chance to win the prize. To see the updated list of prizes, go to The Bra Recyclers website .
Last year, more than 7,000 bras were donated to The Bra Recyclers. And the hope is that this year, they will more than double that number. “This year our goal is to collect 10,000 recycled bras,” said Birks-Mitchell. “We know we can do it, because this is a simple way for anyone to support Breast Cancer and Domestic Violence Awareness.”

The Huit Brand is Making a Comeback!
December 13, 2010
The French brand Huit (pronounced "wheat" and French for the number eight) was in the clutches of bankruptcy. But no more! Eveden, the company that brings us Goddess, Freya, Fantasie, and Elomi bought it. Tracy Lewis, Chief Executive of Eveden came from the UK and visited me in our Dallas office just before Thanksgiving. She shared with me Eveden’s plans for the Huit brand.
By way of background, Huit is a very proud French brand and even includes ‘Paris’ on its label. Traditionally, it has been sold in better boutiques across the United States. HerRoom has also been fortunate enough to carry the brand for many years. The essence of the Huit brand is that it is stylish yet effortless, with hip colors. A premium brand, Huit focuses a lot on being fashionable. Therefore, less than 30% of the Huit products were ever basics. Most were fashion and one-time designs. The brand serviced the 32-38, A to D cup customer.
So, why did Eveden buy Huit? Tracy explained that it was an excellent expansion opportunity. Eveden brands have always been for full-figured women, so this was a very exciting chance to buy a well-known name brand that fits the average size woman. And, there are no plans to take Huit into the full-figure market.
What also impressed me was Tracy’s comment that Eveden retained the current Huit designers in France. Eveden really wants to keep and maintain the special qualities the Huit brand has had for years. Huit has also been a swimwear manufacturer, making swimwear with cup sizing. Eveden absolutely intends to continue the swimwear line as well.
The re-launch is planned for this coming February with new photography. And, there are plans to add 30 band sizes and take the cup sizing up to DD. Of special note, Tracy said to pay attention to the Cupcake Collection. The plan is to expand this further. HerRoom already carries this collection, and I’m crazy about how terrific it looks.
Three cheers for keeping a fabulous lingerie brand alive and moving forward.

A Bra Could Save Your Life?
October 08, 2010
Last year, I blogged about the 2009 winner of the Lg Nobel Prize. As a reminder, the Lg Nobel Prize honors ideas that celebrate the unusual and the imaginative and spur interest in science, medicine and technology. The Award is considered the highlight of the scientific calendar each year. Last year’s winner was a brassiere that, in an emergency, can be turned into a pair of protective face masks. So, here’s the punch line: you can now purchase this bra for $29.95 in scarlet red under it’s new name – The Emergency Bra.
The inventor, Dr. Elena Bodnar, in 1986 started her medical career studying the effects of the Chernobyl nuclear plant disaster. She discovered that if people near the disaster had had cheap gas masks in the first hour after the disaster, much sickness could have been prevented. So, I get the genesis of this idea. But let’s take a little walk down reality lane.
Okay, an alarm goes off signaling a nuclear plant explosion, and you’re wearing this bra. Now what? Superman would duck into a near-by phone booth. But those aren’t around any more. What’s a woman to do? Basically, she must disrobe down to her bare breasts to retrieve this device. Standing topless, she now must decide who gets the other half? My guess is she already has quite an audience to chose from. But if this device is really life saving, my next guess is that all are rushing towards her with outreached hands trying to snatch the two masks away from her. They’re red, so they’re hard to hide. Personally, none of this sounds good to me. I think I’d opt for staying clothed and running for the hills.
And, here’s a second thought. This bra is commonly known to exist. You’re a woman in the crowd and others know you have this life-saving device strapped to your chest. I wouldn’t want to be the victim in that strip search scenario either.
So, here’s an idea. Throw out the element of possible death, and turn this bra into a new-fangled kind of dating prop. No more "spin the bottle." Instead, it’s "Does She, or Doesn’t She." You two simply agree to the rules of the game. Toxic fumes optional…
